When was it exactly that life got so darn complicated?

Sometimes after a long day, I just want to find something to watch that will help me relax and slow my mind down a bit so I will be able to fall asleep. As I scroll through the hundreds of cable channels, and then maybe a quick perusal of Netflix, I suddenly remember a simpler time when we only had 3 channel options (well, really 4, if you included PBS).

Today we have so many options, so many choices, and I’m not talking about just what to watch for entertainment. I’m talking about everything: where to live, work, worship, shop, eat, exercise, who we include in our lives, what phone or latest gadget we just have to have, what to wear; the list goes on and on.

Yet, I wonder.

If you took one day and paid very close attention to all the decisions you make, I think you would be amazed at the sheer volume. We make thousands of decisions every day, but so many of our actions are ruled by our subconscious; we go through huge portions of our day essentially on autopilot.

A friend recently shared an excellent example of this by asking “How often have you been driving a familiar route and realized you can’t remember any specifics of the last couple of miles?” That’s a scary thought. Physically we’re present, but where are our minds?

When we are presented with huge amounts of information and options, we often become overwhelmed and rather than take the time to make a conscious, informed decision, we shut down. That means we either make a snap decision, without a lot of thought or consideration; basically, choosing out of habit or routine. Or we let someone else choose.

Jim Rohn said “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they may have planned for you? Not much.”

What areas of your life are you not 100% satisfied? What choices are you making today that will put you on a new path that will lead to more success and satisfaction in that area of your life?

Rarely do we wake up one morning and make a huge, massive change to our lifestyle. Change usually happens by making small adjustments, little steps toward a bigger goal. Think about getting in shape: you can’t go to the gym 3 times, not see any results and say “well, this doesn’t seem to be working; I give up.” Big change happens by doing little changes every day. We don’t decide our future; we decide our habits and our habits decide our future.

The best part of all of this is that we have the choice. We are the architect of our life. We get to build its foundation and decide what we bring into it.
