What Are You Waiting For?

So what are you waiting for? Waiting for the stay-at-home-order to end? Waiting for the right moment? Waiting to see what’s going to happen once we all get back to “normal”? Whatever you’re telling yourself you are waiting for, know this: it’s an excuse. I know that’s tough to hear but think about it. Really think.

We get to make so many choices throughout our lives, yet we often hide behind our excuses and don’t take ownership of our lives and our choices.

You know the choices, and the excuses I’m talking about. “I stayed in this bad marriage because of the kids.” “I’m in this dead-end job because I don’t have a college degree.” “I get passed over for promotions because my boss doesn’t like me.”

The feelings of not being in control of a situation, our jobs, and even our lives can be overwhelming, especially now. These are indeed challenging times, possibly the most challenging we will face in our lifetime. But there have been challenging times before. People who were faced with even bigger social, political, financial, physical, and economic challenges survived, and many thrived. But others fell into a downward spiral and experienced even more and worse challenges in their lives. Why? Why do some people seem to get through challenges with what seems like ease and others struggle over and over again.

The difference lies in a person’s mindset. When someone feels helpless, when they feel that their unfortunate circumstances are completely out of their control, they tend to just give up. It could be just one area of their life where they are falling short of their desired expectations, but if they allow that one area of failure become their focus, they can get stuck in a negative cycle that impacts all areas of their life. They take on a victim mentality.

The most successful people know that it is not the adversity itself, but the actions that we take that determines our results. Studies have shown* that simply believing we can overcome our current circumstances greatly increases the likelihood of success.

The global pandemic of the Coronavirus is altering life as we know it. It is disrupting all of us in just about every area of our lives, from personal to business and every area in between. What we do now, and next, will make all the difference between allowing this event to simply happen to us and be a victim, or collect our wits, capitalize on our strengths, and figure out a way to move forward in a positive direction.

Most people allow their lives to just happen. They go about their routines; they react. Then suddenly, at some point, they realize a large portion of their life is behind them. That is when they realize they should have been more proactive and strategic. 

With an event like a global pandemic though, we have all been given a wake-up call, and it wasn’t a gentle “sweety, are you awake? It’s time to get up.”

No, it was more like someone we don’t particularly like has grabbed our shoulders and shook us awake while shouting “WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE? GET YOUR BUTT OUT OF BED AND GET MOVING!”

Jim Rohn, an American entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker once said “If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.” He had a great point: if you REALLY want something. All of us want, a lot of things: happiness, love, security, safety, friends, family, money, a job. The list is long.

Wanting is an important step in the process; but it is the doing that makes things happen.

Zig Ziglar, an American author, salesman, and motivational speaker once said “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

While you’re waiting for some perfect scenario to occur, your life is ticking away. That may sound a little dramatic, but it is true. How long have you been waiting? How many more years will it be before you start taking action to reach for what you really want in your life? You will never have more time than you do right now. Timing is rarely perfect. In fact, the perfect time is when you decide.
