Invest In Yourself

Once we complete our formal schooling the responsibility of learning, developing, and growing ourselves rests squarely on our own shoulders. No one is going to show up and say “OK class! We’re going to learn some really cool stuff today!” That just doesn’t happen. If you want to reach your goals and reach your full potential you have to get very intentional about your own personal growth and development. When you decide you want to keep learning, stretching, and growing to reach your fullest potential it’s like you are pouring money into an investment account that can’t get any smaller. When you invest in yourself, you are pouring knowledge into your brain that no one can take away from you. That growth and knowledge compound and accelerate over time.

There are basically three kinds of people.

People who don’t know what they would like to do. These people are confused. They dabble, they drift, they really don’t know what they want to do. So they end up not doing much of anything. They can’t reach their full potential because they have no clear idea what to shoot for.

People who know what they would like to do, but they don’t do it. These people are frustrated. Every day they experience the gap between where they currently are and where they want to be. Sometimes this happens because they feel responsible or trapped in whatever role they are in and they don’t feel like they can make a change to their career or what they’re working on because of their responsibilities or obligations. Or they may be driven by fear. They may have self-doubt. They may question whether or not they are able to do what it is that they really want to do. These people are frustrated.

People who know what they want, and they do it. These people know themselves. They possess a strong sense of purpose. They are focused. They are willing to do whatever it takes to get what it is that they want. These people are fulfilled.

Here are some simple steps that you can take to invest in the most valuable asset that you have, which is YOU!

Read daily. Pick a book that resonates with you on something you want to learn more about. It could be a self-help book, or maybe a biography about someone you admire. Read a couple of pages, every day.

Be present in the moment. Pay attention, wherever you are, whatever is happening. Really observe and absorb what is going on. The past is just a memory and the future is just an idea, but the present is happening now. Be present for it.

Listen. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Listen with the intention of understanding, not with the intent to plan how you are going to respond. When you truly listen you will broaden your perspective and your understanding.

Plan. Get intentional about what you want and start planning what you would need to do in order to make that happen. The most successful people take the time to think and to plan.

Take action. Good intentions and plans are merely dreams unless you take action. Jim Rohn said

“You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.

When you decide you are ready to invest in yourself, consider hiring a coach. A coach helps you with tools, tips, and resources to help you fine tune your goals and to break those goals down into action steps. It is small steps, repeated over time, ever day, every week, every month, that help us achieve our goals. The question is: are you ready to begin?
