Such a simple question: What do you want? Should be easy to answer, right? But surprisingly, we know way more about what we don’t want, than what we do want. What, really? Yes, really.
As children, we learned about things usually by finding out what not to do, by learning what we didn’t like. Touch a hot store, get an owie. Pull the cat’s tail, get scratched. We learned how to ride a bike by first learning how not to ride a bike, by falling over, a lot.
Knowing what we don’t want, and what we don’t like, is fairly easy. Turn the question around though, and identifying what you DO want can be challenging.
There are many aspects to our lives. We all have varying levels of satisfaction in each area: significant other, family, career, travel, recreation, spirituality, personal growth/development, physical health, environment, adventure, friends, etc. Let’s focus on one aspect of life: your career.
How satisfied are you in your current work? Do you long for more responsibility? A higher level or different position? Or maybe you want to own your own business?
Whatever it is you are hoping for, wishing for, or wanting, it’s not going to happen all on its own. Change requires action. Doing the same things will lead to the same results. If you want something to change, you are going to have to do things differently than you are currently.
This is great! You’ve identified something you want. You are ready to go after it. Where do you begin? A great place to start is by getting a coach. A coach has the tools, resources, and experience to guide you on your journey so you can get to where you want to be, faster.
I’ve had the opportunity to have a coach multiple times in my career. Years ago, when the coaching business was very new to anyone other than professional and Olympic athletes, I turned down the opportunity to hire a coach, multiple times. I didn’t realize how a coach could help me. But when I found myself in a job where my advancement was getting blocked by my boss, where I hated going to work every day, where I was so eager to get out I was at risk of running away from something bad rather than running to something better, I hired a career coach. What a positive impact it had!
My coach helped me narrow down my focus to what I truly wanted in my next position and company.
I had been hoping, wishing, and wanting, but I wasn’t taking the steps that would help me achieve my goal. My coach helped me get clarity. My coach helped me identify the actions steps I needed to take. My coach helped me hold myself accountable, to keep my commitments to myself.
With my coach’s help, I found my dream job. It was even better than I had imagined and happened faster than I could have ever accomplished on my own.
Hoping, wishing, and wanting are all fine and good, but the doing is what will bring your dream to fruition. Start the doing. Hire a coach. Today.
